Funny Games is a suspense/horror movie about a family going to their summer vacation home, where they meet two young boys staying in the house next door. They come over and ask to borrow some eggs, and the story the unravels next is really dark, twisted, scary, and really random and unexpected. My stepmom randomly picked this movie on Netflix because we both love suspenseful/thriller movies, but by the end of this movie we were both in a state of shock. The story turns from a family going on a nice summer vacation to a torture, hostage-y scene less than 20 minutes into the movie. There is nothing left to the imagination, either. The entire movie is really disturbing and poorly made. There is no character development, it is just watching these two boys tormenting and killing this family. The two young boys are less than 20 years old and wear all white, and they speak in a slow, haunting voice. In the first couple minutes, one of the boys kills the family's dog with a golf club, just so you know they are for sure sociopaths. There is not much to say about this movie, because it is just so terrible and disturbing. There are no redeeming qualities. The whole time, I felt angry and confused because the plot turns very dark very fast. It is a series of very unfortunate events. *SPOILER* The whole family dies. They even kill the 10 year old son. And the dog. This movie is terrible. Don't watch it.

The Hitman's Bodyguard is a movie that has action, romance, and comedy all wrapped up into one film. Ryan Reynolds plays one of the world's highest ranking protection agents. He is assigned to be the bodyguard for one of the most notorious hitmen, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Though these two have been enemies for years, they are forced to get along for at least a day when Reynolds is assigned to protect Jackson while he is testifying in court against a tyrannical East European dictator on trial for committing mass genocide.
This movie is action packed and filled with violence/blood and guts, which is great if you're into that kind of thing. If you're not, then this movie might seem like it's not for you. Going into the theater, I wasn't expecting much from this movie except maybe a headache. However, I turned out to be pleasantly surprised. I don't watch a lot of movies with crazy car-chase scenes through alleys and gun shoot offs (if that's even what one calls them), but I do admit that the scenes like that in the movie were quite impressive. The violence and scenes filled with blood and gunshots got old fast, but the movie was also filled with hilarious comedy and even a small romance on the side that balanced everything out. Reynolds and Jackson worked perfectly together with satirical dialogue. It was one of those movies where the entire audience bursts into laughter after a punch line, though many of these punch lines did involve some obscenity. Both characters Reynolds and Jackson face conflict with their love lives, which is as expected in an action movie. Both of these conflicts end u getting resolved, which is nice because a happy ending is always great. But the best part of the entire film is that Reynolds and Jackson working together ensures that one of the world's worst genocidal European dictators goes down. As the movie plays out, the viewer gets a bi too a back story on the guy, who is played by Gary Oldman, and we all soon find out that he is basically evil incarnate. *SPOILERS* As the movie ends, and Reynolds and Jackson make it to the court, the entire building erupts due to a bomb set by Oldman who then tries to make an escape. Jackson follows him to the roof, and after a couple of missed gun shots, Jackson pushes him straight off the edge of the building. The dictator dying was a great ending and resolve for the movie, and my personal favorite part. This movie perfectly balances comedy, romance, action, and justice/revenge into one movie. It is by no means a favorite, but it did make me laugh a lot and I would recommend. |
